• Brushing

So many people love the longer hair cuts but just can’t seem to fully get their doggie’s brushed out so they don’t have tangles or mats. I love being able to help them brush their dogs in between grooms by explaining to them a brief how-to in brushing. And now I want to help more people by giving a little how-to here. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, I’m more than happy to help.

Here is a picture of a dog with the arrows showing you the directions you should go in (remember you are brushing against the grain of the hair, you are still brushing with the grain):

What you want to do is to start on the rear legs first at the feet. Little by little you want to go in sections, brushing with the grain of the hair so you are brushing into hair that is no longer tangled. Just like how women brush their hair from the bottom up. It is so much easier on the dog to brush this way and makes the experience more comfortable.

After completing the rear legs you can work on the rear end as well as the tail and work your way up to the shoulders. Once you are at the shoulders you should do the front legs starting at the feet and working up to the shoulders where you left off. Then of course you have the neck and head to go and you are finished brushing with your brush at that point.

I recommend using a slicker brush:

Once you have finished with your brush you aren’t completely done. At this point you want to make sure you have gotten your brush all the way down to the skin and have not missed any spots. So you should then grab your medium/fine comb:

You will go in the same directions as you did with your slicker brush back to front, bottom to top and this should tell you if you brushed out any and all tangles. Don’t zip through this process. Not only do you not want to miss anything but you also don’t want to hit a tangle at lightening speed and upset your doggie.
